Growing up, I was the white girl in class. In Portland, I'm a POC. It's funny how the way people perceive you is based on the culture of the place..

I don't feel like I fit in with most white people here but on the other hand, whenever I show up to events intended for POC I spend the whole time feeling self conscious.. "Why is this white girl here?" Being biracial is bittersweet.

Although I struggled with culture shock when I first moved here and often felt out of place, I got over it. Why be frustrated about it when you can work towards positive change? Living in Portland for two years has made me miss all of the Mexican-ness associated with SoCal. I believe that living here has inspired me to reconnect with my roots, better understand my ancestors, and fight for social justice in Portland. 🇲🇽
