I was born and raised in the US, but I racially identify as Mexican. My entire life I was taught the "Mexican" ways and learned Spanish at home for my first language. Things that I value now because of the way I was raised are family, mutual respect, and hard work. Ethnically, I identify as Hispanic. Growing up, the majority of people I would surround myself with were typically Hispanic and other friends here and there, so I feel that this helped me with the values I now hold. I'd like people to know that not all Mexicans are illegal low life criminals like we are said to be by many people. We are a very welcoming compassionate people that want to make it ahead like many others. Living in a diverse place like Portland has given me a bit of comfort because there are more people like me that are in similar situations and I don't feel as alone as if I were living somewhere else.
