My family came to Portland about 10 years ago in pursuit of a better life. I was always an explorer who liked to venture out and discover things. Looking for new spots was something that always excited me but I never really had the time to do that in Mexico. As a child I was taught that you earn your place, that no one else but you determines how successful you are. I gotta say I still agree with that to an extent. Some of us already got a head start in life while others started at the very bottom. Not only do we start at the bottom but people keep us there using factors such as religion, race, or beliefs. That’s where being Latino matters in this type of society. We are told that we were never meant to be at the top in the first place. As much as I complained I always knew I had it better than other people. I was poor but I did have a family that helped support me. Although just because something is better than it used to be doesn’t mean it okay to leave it how it is. We have to strive further where we can all live in peace.
