I identify as a Latino Guatemalan who’s lived in Portland for all my life in the same house. I live with both my parents and 3 other siblings.
Most of the people in my neighborhood have been Asian but both my neighbors have been the same nice white folk since we got our house. I never really saw people of my race growing up but I never really took notice nor did it affect how I felt in my community because race wasn’t something I noticed as a kid until I got older once my school really told what it was.
In school I am probably one of three latinos in my class but never did I feel my teachers treated me differently due to my race. In my experience, never did one of my teachers make me feel discriminated against or treat me in a racist manner. Not anywhere else in fact. Luckily for me I’ve never experienced racism. I truly believe your race can’t hold you back completely from your pursuit towards success in Portland. I think if you go to class, give a solid effort, and treat your teachers with respect, you will do great in school.
Living in Portland has been great. To me its the city of bipolar weather! I know this since the way I spend my time is biking around with my buddy or just going to parks to play either basketball or frisbee with my squad. One of my favorite spots here is the playground behind Harrison Park, my old middle school. Many hours were spent there when I did and didn't attend the school with my friends that started at during the day time and ended in the night.
I love Portland and Portland has given me the same love back. I feel at home anywhere. At a park, on a bike path, or even at the grocery store.
